Data Destruction :
Many people ask us what happens to their hard drive after they give it to us, of if we can guarantee that their data will not get out into the hands of someone that will use it against them. One of our Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) dictates how we handle hard drives and the data on them.
We first test a hard drive to see if it actually works or not, and if it has any bad sectors. If the hard drive works perfectly, we do a full drive wipe on it and securely erase the data. Then we are able to use the hard drive in computer systems again.
If the drive is not working properly, or has bad sectors on it, meaning it WILL eventually fail, we then give the hard drive to our “official data destruction department” - Tazhi.
Not much can destroy data more effectively than a 7 year old with a hammer. Tazhi at age 7 is our youngest volunteer and shows up eagerly almost every day to do her job. She actually brings her own safety goggles. Her newest interest is using a screwdriver kit and taking the drives apart to see how they are put together... and then using the hammer on the platters to destroy them. Who knows... maybe you are seeing a future mechanical or environmental engineer in the making ?
Here is a video clip of our “official data destruction department” performing their work :
